Worlds in Words
From simple information folders, through brochures and books, to voluminous studies.
Reading in English
I read comparatively rarely in English, since this language—unlike German and my native Polish, which I know best—I only command superficially. Nevertheless, publications in English do come into my hands, and I do not wish to ignore them. While reading, I sometimes need to consult a dictionary to grasp the meaning of a word. Other meanings I infer from context or by tracing common roots with German or Polish. Moreover, certain works that interest me are available only in English, which compels me to read them in that language.
I occasionally buy albums and encyclopedias at book stalls, where attractively priced editions catch my eye with their appealing appearance. I usually receive used books as gifts, mostly from within my family. Another source of reading material are finds in the stairwell, where used or even new books are left out for treasure hunters like me. Recently, I’ve also been ordering quite a few things online. In addition, I enjoy using public book exchange points, which offer easy access to a wide variety of literature. All of these sources are listed in the alphabetically arranged bibliography.
Some publications
contain inaccurate information or express views I either partially reject or completely disagree with. Nevertheless, they also offer coherent arguments, credible reports, and insightful analyses, which is why I reference them in the context of my interests in tourism, history, and cultural studies.
